Start By:

  1. Remove the track adjusters. See Disassembly and Assembly, “Track Adjuster – Remove”.

Note: All of the part numbers in this operation are part of tooling (A) or (B) .

    Illustration 1 g00626604

  1. Remove eyebolt (1) that holds the cable assembly to the front roller frame.

    Illustration 2 g00626605

  1. Remove four bolts (2) and two stops (3) .

Note: The procedure that follows must not be used unless stop plates (16) have been welded on each of the four openings (slots) in the 6V-2168 Plate. The plates make proper alignment with the 6V-2168 Plate on the 1M-6766 Studs. The plates prevent movement of the 1M-6766 Studs from the openings (slots). Use 25.4 mm (1 inch) by 50.8 mm (2 inch) by 9.6 mm (0.38 inch) plates.

  1. Install tooling (A) in order to remove the recoil spring and the guide.
    1. Install 1M-6766 Studs (5) into the front track roller frame, as shown.
    1. Install 4C-9634 Puller Stud (15) into the flanged end of 5P-8620 Pilot (6). Install the 7H-7539 Full Nut in order to hold the stud in place. Install the assembly into the front track roller frame with the long threaded end of the stud toward the outside of the front track roller frame.
    1. Install the following components onto the studs. 5P-8713 Plate (7), 5P-8712 Bushing (8), 6V-0113 Double Acting Cylinder (9), 5P-8713 Plate (10) and 6V-2168 Plate (17) .
    1. Install the following components on 1M-6766 Studs : FT-1408 Spacers (11), FT-1409 Spacers (12), 9H-1031 Hard Washers (13) and 2J-2505 Nuts .

Note: Make sure that the 9U-6600 Hand Hydraulic Pump pressure line from the head end of the 6V-0113 Double Acting Cylinder is connected through a 1S-8937 Needle Valve. The pressure can be controlled in order to gradually release the recoil spring.

    1. Connect the 9U-6600 Hand Hydraulic Pump to the 6V-0113 Double Acting Cylinder. Extend the 6V-0113 Double Acting Cylinder (9) until the rod is extended approximately 114 mm (4.5 inch) out of the cylinder.
    1. Fasten an appropriate lifting device to tooling (A). Ensure that the 1M-6766 Studs (5) are parallel. Ensure that the studs are the same distance from stop plates (16) on 6V-2168 Plate (17) .
    1. Place 5P-8620 Pilot (6) in the center of retainer (4). Tighten 2J-3505 Full Nuts (14) in order to hold the assembly in correct alignment.
    1. Measure the nuts. Adjust 2J-3505 Full Nuts (14). All four corners of 6V-2168 Plate (17) must be equal in distance from the face of the front track roller frame.
    1. Use only enough pressure to extend the rod of the cylinder enough to make a compression of the recoil spring so the recoil spring retainer can be turned. Close the 1S-8937 Needle Valve. Turn the pump valve to the “RETRACT CYLINDER ROD” position.

      Illustration 4 g00626606

    1. Use 12.7 mm (0.5 inch)50.8 mm (2 inch) by 609.6 mm (24 inch) bar stock (18). Turn recoil spring retainer (4) counterclockwise. Move the retainer out of the front track roller frame 12.7 mm (0.5 inch). Release the cylinder pressure through the 1S-8937 Needle Valve. Permit the recoil spring to extend 12.7 mm (0.5 inch) when the cylinder rod retracts 12.7 mm (0.5 inch). Close the 1S-8937 Needle Valve .
    1. Turn out retainer (4) by an additional 12.7 mm (0.5 inch). Slowly release the cylinder pressure through the 1S-8937 Needle Valve. Retract the cylinder rod by the same distance. Close the 1S-8937 Needle Valve.
    1. When the cylinder rod is near the fully retracted position, turn recoil spring retainer (4) clockwise. Hold the recoil spring and remove the force away from the cylinder rod. Retract the cylinder rod.
  1. Install tooling (B), as follows., Remove the recoil spring.

      Illustration 5 g00626607

    1. Remove 2J-3505 Full Nuts (14), FT-1409 Spacers (12), and FT-1408 Spacers (11) from the studs.

      Illustration 6 g00626608

    1. Extend the 6V-0113 Double Acting Cylinder (9) until the rod is extended approximately 114 mm (4.5 inch) out of the cylinder.
    1. Install 9H-1031 Hard Washers (13) and 2J-3505 Nuts (14) on the 1M-6766 Studs. Adjust the 2J-3505 Nuts (14). All four corners of 6V-2168 Plate (17) must be the same distance from the face of the front track roller frame.
    1. Turn out recoil spring retainer (4) with bar (18). Retract the cylinder rod in 127 mm (5 inch) steps.

      Illustration 7 g00626609

    1. If the cylinder rod is nearly retracted and the recoil spring retainer is not extended 228.6 mm (9 inch) out of the front track roller frame, adjust 2J-3505 Nuts (14). Turn out the nuts to the ends of 1M-6766 Studs (5). Extend the cylinder rod by the same distance.
    1. Measure the nut. Adjust the 2J-3505 Full Nuts (14). All four corners of 6V-2168 Plate (17) must be the same distance from the front track roller frame.
    1. Slowly release the pressure of the spring. Turn out recoil spring retainer (4) while the cylinder rod is retracted in 12.7 mm (0.5 inch) steps. Continue until the force of the spring is completely released.

      Illustration 8 g00626610

    1. Remove tooling (B). Fasten an appropriate lifting device to recoil spring retainer (4) and remove the retainer. The weight of the recoil spring retainer is 36 kg (79 lb).

      Illustration 9 g00626611

    1. Remove guide (19) from the front track roller frame.

      Illustration 10 g00626612

      NOTICE

Do not damage the threads on the inside of the front track roller frame when th erecoil spring is removed.

    1. Install a bar (21) in the recoil spring and fasten an appropriate lifting device to the bar. Lift up the recoil spring and remove recoil spring (20) from the front track roller frame. The weight of the recoil spring is 135 kg (298 lb).
