Adjustment For Bevel Gear Preload

Preload bearings so that a torque of 3.5 to 5.0 N·m (30 to 45 lb in) is required to rotate the bevel gear shaft. This requires removal of approximately 0.13 mm (.005 in) shims after shaft end play has been taken up.

(1) Tighten a minimum of three bolts equally spaced on each bearing cage.

(2) Rotate the bevel gear shaft at 300 to 400 rpm for a minimum of 20 seconds.

(3) Without reversing rotation, measure preload torque in the same direction as the bevel gear shaft was rotated for 20 seconds.

(4) Rotate the bevel gear shaft for a minimum of 20 seconds after each shim change.
