Make reference to Analyzing Turbocharger Failure, Form No. FEG45138.

(1) End play for shaft (new) … 0.114 ± 0.038 mm (.0045 ± .0015 in)

Maximum permissible end play (worn) … 0.20 mm (.008 in)

(2) Thickness of thrust bearing … 5.36 ± 0.03 mm (.211 ± .001 in)

(3) Diameter of surface on shaft (journal) for the bearing (new) … 14.254 to 14.262 mm (.5612 to .5615 in)

Bore in the bearing (new) … 14.293 to 14.300 mm (.5627 to .5630 in)

Maximum permissible clearance between bearing and shaft (worn) … 0.08 mm (.003 in)

(4) Put 5P3931 Anti-Seize Compound on threads and tighten bolt that holds band clamp to … 13.6 N·m (120 lb in)

(5) Maximum permissible gap of oil seal ring, measured in bore of housing … 0.23 mm (.009 in)

(6) Turbocharger Impeller Installation.

A. Put 6V1541 Quick Cure Primer on the nut and the shaft threads to clean them, if necessary.

B. Put a small amount of 9S3265 Retaining Compound on the nut and shaft threads.


NOTICE

Do not let the retaining compound get into the compressor wheel bore or on the shaft, because it can make removal of the compressor wheel difficult during future turbocharger disassembly.


C. Put a small amount of lubricant, such as Lubriplate, on the nut seat area on the compressor. Do not put lubricant on the threads.

D. Tighten the compressor wheel retainer nut to … 30 ± 3 N·m (264 ± 24 lb in)


NOTICE

Do not bend or add stress to the shaft when nut is tightened.


(7) Bore in housing (new) … 22.255 to 22.268 mm (.8762 to .8767 in)

Outside diameter of the bearing (new) … 22.144 to 22.154 mm (.8718 to .8722 in)

Maximum permissible clearance between bearing and bore in housing (worn) … 0.15 mm (.006 in)

(8) Thickness of each thrust ring … 2.553 ± 0.013 mm (.1005 ± .0005 in)

(9) Put 5P3931 Anti-Seize Compound on threads and tighten bolts that hold turbocharger to manifold to … 55 ± 5 N·m (40 ± 4 lb ft)

Schwitzer S4D

(1) End play for shaft (new) … 0.114 ± 0.038 mm (.0045 ± .0015 in)

Maximum permissible end play (worn) … 0.20 mm (.008 in)

(2) Thickness of thrust bearing (where thrust rings contact bearing) … 5.36 ± 0.03 mm (.211 ± .001 in)

(3) Bore in housing (new) … 24.994 to 25.006 mm (.9840 to .9845 in)

Outside diameter of the bearing (new) … 24.882 to 24.892 mm (.9796 to .9800 in)

Maximum permissible clearance between bearing and bore in housing (worn) … 0.15 mm (.006 in)

(4) Maximum permissible gap of oil seal ring, measured in bore of housing … 0.25 mm (.010 in)

(5) Install the compressor wheel (at room temperature) as follows:

a. Put the compressor wheel in position on the shaft.

b. Put a small amount of clean engine oil on the shaft threads.

c. Install the nut on the shaft, and tighten the nut to a torque of 14 to 17 N·m (125 to 150 lb in).


NOTICE

Do not bend or add stress to the shaft when nut is loosened or tightened.


d. Remove nut from shaft and apply 6V1541 Quick Cure Primer on the threads of the shaft and nut followed by application of 9S3265 Retaining Compound.

e. Install the nut on the shaft, and tighten the nut to a torque of 4 N·m (30 lb in).

f. Tighten nut more as follows:

For 99.0 mm (3.90 in) diameter compressor wheels, tighten the nut an additional 90°.

For 86.4 mm (3.40 in) diameter compressor wheels, tighten the nut an additional 60°.

(6) Tighten both band clamps with procedure that follows:

a. Tighten to … 14 ± 1.1 N·m (125 ± 10 lb in)

b. Tap (hit) clamp lightly all around.

c. Tighten again to … 14 ± 1.1 N·m (125 ± 10 lb in)


NOTICE

Do not overtighten the clamps.


(7) Thickness of each thrust ring … 2.553 ± 0.013 mm (.1005 ± .0005 in)

(8) Diameter of shaft (new) … 15.997 to 16.005 mm (.6298 to .6301 in)

Bore in the bearing (new) … 16.035 to 16.043 mm (.6313 to .6316 in)

Maximum permissible clearance between bearing and shaft (worn) … 0.05 mm (.002 in)

Torque for four nuts (put 5P3931 Anti-Seize Compound on threads) and bolts that hold the turbocharger to the exhaust manifold … 55 ± 5 N·m (40 ± 4 lb ft)

NOTE: Put clean engine oil in the oil inlet of the turbocharger after assembly or before installation to provide start up lubrication and/or storage protection.

Schwitzer S3A

(1) End play for shaft (new) … 0.100 ± 0.018 mm (.0039 ± .0007 in)

Maximum permissible end play (worn) … 0.02 mm (.008 in)

(2) Thickness of thrust bearing (where thrust rings contact bearing) … 5.372 ± 0.013 mm (.2115 ± .0005 in)

(3) Tighten both band clamps with procedure that follows:

a. Tighten to … 14 ± 1.1 N·m (125 ± 10 lb in)

b. Tap (hit) clamp lightly all around.

c. Tighten again to … 14 ± 1.1 N·m (125 ± 10 lb in)


NOTICE

Do not overtighten the clamps


(4) Diameter of shaft (new) … 11.570 to 11.577 mm (.4555 to .4558 in)

Bore in bearing(new) … 11.608 to 11.618 mm (.4570 to .4574 in)

Maximum permissible clearance between bearing and shaft(worn) … 0.05 mm (.002 in)

(5) Maximum permissible gap of oil seal ring, measured in bore of housing … 0.25 mm (.010 in)

(6) Install the compressor wheel (at room temperature) as follows:

a. Put compressor wheel on the shaft.


NOTICE

Do not bend or add stress to the shaft when nut is loosened or tightened.


b. Remove nut from shaft and apply 6V1541 Quick Cure Primer on the threads of the shaft and nut followed by application of 9S3265 Retaining Compound.

c. Tighten nut to 14.4 ± 0.5 N·m (125 ± 4 lb in)

(7) Thickness of each thrust ring … 2.5463 ± 0.0064 mm (.10025 ± .00025 in)

(8) Bore in housing (new) … 19.050 to 19.075 mm (.7500 to .7510 in)

Outside diameter of the bearing (new) … 18.936 to 18.948 mm (.7455 to .7460 in)

Maximum permissible clearance between bearing and bore in housing (worn) … 0.15 mm (.006 in)

Torque for four nuts (put 5P3931 Anti-Seize Compound on threads) and bolts that hold turbocharger to exhaust manifold … 70 ± 15 N·m (50 ± 11 lb ft)

NOTE: Put clean engine oil in the oil inlet of the turbocharger after assembly or before installation to provide start up lubrication and/or storage protection.

Schwitzer 3LM

Make reference to Analyzing Turbocharger Failure, Form No. FEG45138.

(1) End play for shaft (new) … 0.05 ± 0.13 mm (.002 ± .005 in)

(2) Put 5P3931 Anti-Seize Compound on threads and tighten bolts holding impeller housing to … 6.8 N·m (5 lb ft)

(3) Put 5P3931 Anti-Seize Compound on threads and tighten bolts holding turbine housing to … 15 to 17 N·m (11 to 12 lb ft)

(4) Maximum permissible gap of oil seal ring, measured in bore of housing … 0.18 mm (.007 in)

(5) Turbocharger Impeller Installation.

A. Put 6V1541 Quick Cure Primer on the nut and the shaft threads to clean them, if necessary.

B. Put a small amount of 9S3265 Retaining Compound on the nut and shaft threads.


NOTICE

Do not let the retaining compound get into the compressor wheel bore or on the shaft, because it can make removal of the compressor wheel difficult during future turbocharger disassembly.


C. Put a small amount of lubricant, such as Lubriplate, on the nut seat area on the compressor. Do not put lubricant on the threads.

D. Tighten the compressor wheel retainer nut to … 30 ± 3 N·m (264 ± 24 lb in)


NOTICE

Do not bend or add stress to the shaft when nut is tightened.


(6) Thickness of thrust bearing … 2.72 to 2.74 mm (.107 to .108 in)

(7) Bearing:

Bore in housing for bearing … 19.050 to 19.063 mm (.7500 to .7505 in)

Diameter of surface of bearing for housing … 18.948 to 18.961 mm (.7460 to .7465 in)

Diameter of surface of bearing for shaft … 11.214 to 11.222 mm (.4415 to .4418 in)

Diameter of surface of shaft for bearing (journal) … 11.176 to 11.184 mm (.4400 to .4403 in)

Length of bearing … 61.60 to 61.62 mm (2.425 to 2.426 in)
